We’re a Chicago based teacher-owned co-op offering small-group English lessons for students of English as a Foreign language. We’re here to help you improve your ability to speak in English language. We help you do this by using the communicative approach of language learning.

What is EFL Speakeasy?

The Communicative Approach is a way of teaching English that focuses on real communication. Instead of just memorizing grammar rules or doing exercises, students use English to talk, listen, ask questions, and share ideas—just like in real life.

In our classes, we:

  • Focus on speaking and understanding

  • Use real-world situations and topics

  • Practice in small groups for more personal attention (8 students max.)

  • Help you build confidence in everyday communication

What is the Communicative Approach?

We’re Frankie and Dustin—two experienced teachers with a combined 20+ years of teaching experience, who believe learning English should be an enjoyable experience and facilitate a sense of community.

Together, we created EFL SpeakEasy to offer something different: a space where language learning is rooted in solidarity and driven by real conversation. Through the Communicative Approach, we will show you how to speak like a native!

EFL SpeakEasy was born out of a struggle. We came together in solidarity while organizing for better working conditions at our employer’s Chicago based ESL school. While ultimately unsuccessful, it brought us together and revealed what we truly wanted: to build something better. EFL SpeakEasy is the result.

We are a worker-run school grounded in shared values, mutual respect, and the belief that language is power.

Meet Your Fellow Worker-Teachers!

Howdy! I'm Frankie—an English teacher with nearly a decade of experience helping learners feel more confident, capable, and curious in their language journey.
I hold a master’s degree in TESOL and Applied Linguistics, and over the years I’ve taught in a variety of settings—from public schools and private language programs to colleges and universities.

I love creating classes where students feel supported and challenged, and where learning English feels less like a task and more like a conversation. Whether we’re working through grammar or just sharing stories, I aim to make every lesson engaging, practical, and full of small wins.
